My Favorite Cowboy Movies

I love a cowboy movie, in fact, I miss the days when you could count on a western movie being on television on Saturday afternoon. In those days we had two television channels...two...and yet I could always see a western. Today, with basic cable I have about 30 channels, and it's a rarity to see a western movie. So to make up for that, we used to rent a western movie on the weekends, but these days, we often buy them instead. The price isn't that high, and we can watch them as often as we like. So I thought it might be interesting to list some of my favorite western movies.....

These are listed in no particular order, I haven't chosen a favorite, I like them all!

1) Quigley Down Under Considering this movie is set in Australia, it might seem an odd pick for a western, but it is one of my favorites. It stars Tom Selleck, who in my humble opinion makes a hell of a cowboy!

2) True Grit (Special Collector's Edition) No list of western movies can be complete without mentioning the cowboy of all cowboys, John Wayne. In True Grit he stars as Rooster Cogburn, an old Marshal intent on getting the job done. This is an epic movie and worth watching.

3)Conagher Another guy who was born to make western movies has to be Sam Elliot, and in Conagher, he brings a Louis l'Amour character to life.

4)The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance Two of the greats, Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne bring this story life, in what is a western classic. It's an interesting movie, and perhaps even a little deeper than some westerns. I have seen it a couple of times and enjoyed it.

5)High Plains Drifter Clint Eastwood at his finest, and like all movies starring Clint Eastwood, it's interesting, exciting and an all around great western!

6) The Stalking Moon starring Gregory Peck, another actor who made great western movies and characters. Any movie starring Gregory Peck is a good movie.

7) Winchester '73 Talk about a Saturday afternoon classic movie. James Stewart in Winchester '73 is a western movie classic, and one that I have seen many times, always enjoying it. In fact, I think I am going to buy this DVD just to have it. I love this movie.

8)No Name on the Bullet I had to include an Audie Murphy movie in this list because as I was growing up, Audie Murphy, who was a real life World War II hero, was also a fine cowboy actor, and when I saw his name on a movie billboard, I was lined up for the show on opening day.

9) The Paleface Ha-Ha! This is a western with a twist, starring legendary comedian Bob Hope, this is a fun movie, and like all of Bob Hope's endeavors lots of laughs. I couldn't make a list of my favorite western's without including this one and the sequel, Son of Paleface

10) Unforgiven Another Clint Eastwood western, a true Eastwood classic and one of my favorites for sure.
